Gandhi Jayanti is a National festival in India. It is observed on 2nd of October every year. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2nd October, 1869. He is famously known as Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma means “Great Soul”. He is also known in India as the “Father of the Nation”.
October 2nd is a festival known as Gandhi Jayanti. In other words, it is the birthday of Gandhi. So, on this day every single year, Indians (as well as those who have been inspired by Gandhi across the world), celebrate the life and works of Gandhi.


The day of Gandhi Jayanti is dedicated as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. He was a great leader of the Indian Independence Movement. He launched the famous “Quit India Movement” to drive the British out of our country. This day is a gazetted holiday in India.
Mahatma Gandhi followed the principles of Non-violence and peace through his life. This day is also observed as International Day on Non-violence.

Rabindranath Tagore, one of the greatest Indian poet, gave Gandhi the title of “Mahatma”, which literally means “Great Soul”. In Sanskrit “Maha” means “Great” and “Atma” means “Soul”.
He was born at Porbandar in Gujarat on 2nd October, 1869. He was a very simple man lived a very simple life. However, his thoughts and philosophy influenced many peoples. He always followed the principles of non-violence, truth, and honesty. Thus, he coined the term “Satyagraha” which means “Truth (Satya)” and “Non-Violence (Ahimsa)”.

About Gandhi Ji (or Gandhi g as most people say)

Born on 2nd October 1869 in a small coastal town, Mahatma Gandhi has always been a legend for us. Fondly called Bapu or father of India, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (MK Gandhi) was the youngest of all the three sons of Putlibai and Karamchand. Gandhi completed his primary education in Porbandar and achieved the higher education at Albert High School, Rajkot.  The place where Gandhiji was born is now known as Kirti Mandir.

Gandhi Jayanti is one of the three most important national events in India (other two are Republic Day and Independence Day).  It is celebrated all over India with great enthusiasm to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma GandhiGandhi Jayanti is mainly celebrated to pay honor to Mahatma Gandhi who struggled a lot for the Indian independence from the British rule. Role of Mahatma Gandhi in Indian National Movement for Independence

One of the greatest and the most successful movements led by Gandhiji was the Champaran Movement.
When Mahatma Gandhi returned to India, he came to know about the problems, peasants were facing. Champaran is a small district situated in Northern Bihar. Here, the peasants were forced to grow indigo on their smaller pieces if land even if it was not possible to do so. In fact, the peasants were bearing huge losses by cultivating indigo on their fertile lands.
Gandhi also led the struggle for the poor peasants to increase in their wages and got success in it as well. There was an increase of 35% in their wages after the movement.
